Space Ladies Project

Last year, Sierra of SierraRoses SFX Makeup had a cool idea to do a few different space-themed photo shoots that would involve airbrush makeup techniques. She loosely based the concept on this Planettes art series by GDBee Art. Sierra and Dan of Dan Arango Photography teamed up to bring this concept to life, and they were nice enough to invite me to be one of their models. Everything about this sounded super cool, so of course I said yes! We did the actual shoot last January.

For my character, Sierra chose a look based on the rings of Saturn. Although I did not have a costume at the ready, I was able to repurpose the catsuit and wig I use for my Darwyn Cooke-style Catwoman cosplay and add some different accessories to switch things over to the theme.

Three other cosplayers also participated:
Natalie was Neptune,
Evelyn was Mars, and
Angela was the Milky Way. They all did an amazing job!

To restyle my costume, I made gloves, a belt, and some shoulder bands out of matte silver spandex fabric. (I also made some boot tops, but forgot to bring them to the shoot. Oh well!)

Normally I would have put a bunch of time into these accessories, but I fell behind in my maker schedule. So I resorted to quick and dirty construction techniques, which is not normally my style. However, for a one-time photo shoot, I figured I could bend my rules. I did not even figure out an attachment to keep the arm bands up on my shoulders, because I decided I could just push them up long enough to do the photos. (Though they stayed put much better than I anticipated.) And I used, *gasp*, super glue to stick down the fabric cover on the craft foam of the belt, and then did not bother with a lining. This was not going to win any construction awards!

But the belt looks good from the outside!

Here is a photo of Sierra applying the airbrush makeup.

We did the shoot in Dan’s basement, where he has set up a studio area. He did most of the photos with red lighting on the background to get the feeling of Saturn.

In some shots Mike and Sierra sprayed fake fog (from a can!) behind me, which created a neat effect when the lights bounced off of it.

Here Dan is demonstrating how he wants me to hold two swords. I thought it was pretty funny and kind of lost it.

The entire experience was so much fun, and the photos came out phenomenally well! Thank you Sierra and Dan!
